7th house in astrology: why you keep meeting the same person

New name. New city. Same conversation. Your 7th house and the person you keep meeting.

The 7th house is the part of your birth chart that describes close one-to-one relationships: partners, spouses, business partners and open rivals. It sits opposite your Ascendant (the sign rising at the moment you were born), which describes how you meet the world. So the 7th house shows what you tend to look for outside yourself.

To know your 7th house you need your birth time, because houses depend on it.

Does this sound familiar?

  • A new person, and within months the same argument as with the last one.
  • Friends tell you that you have a type. You don't see it until the third time.
  • You leave someone over a thing, and the next one has it too.
  • The qualities that attracted you are the ones that wear you out two years later.

What psychology calls it

Carl Jung called it projection: what we can't see in ourselves, we see in someone else, and then we fall in love with it or fight it. Freud described a related habit, repetition: people return to old situations, often without noticing, until they understand them.

Astrology has its own map for the same pattern. The 7th house describes it. It can't tell you who you'll meet or how a relationship will end.

Planets in the 7th house

Moon. You look for home in a person. When their mood shifts, your whole day shifts with it.

Mercury. You fall for the conversation. Two years later you're still talking about the relationship instead of living in it.

Venus. People come easily and you keep the peace. You can go years without saying what you actually wanted.

Mars. You keep meeting people who start the fight. You've never once had to admit how much you wanted one.

Saturn. You pick the one who's hard to please, then work to earn what should have been free.

Uranus. They leave suddenly, again. Part of you chose someone who would never ask you to stay.

Neptune. You fall for who they could be. Years later you're still waiting to meet that person.

Pluto. All or nothing, and someone always holds the power. One day you notice it was sometimes you.

Chiron. You help them heal, then leave before anyone asks about you.

No planets in your 7th house?

That's common, and it doesn't mean relationships won't matter to you. Look at the sign on the cusp of the house (the line where it begins) and where that sign's ruling planet sits in your chart. The ruling planet shows where your relationships tend to play out.

Think of the last two people who mattered to you. What did you say about them at the start, and what did you say at the end?
