8th house in astrology: what you hand over, and what you hold back

The 8th house is the part of your birth chart that describes what you share so deeply with another person that it is no longer only yours: joint money, debts and inheritance, sex, secrets, and the changes that come when something ends. Older books call it the house of death. Most of what it describes happens in ordinary life: the shared account, the password, the thing you told one person.
To find your 8th house you need your birth time, because the houses depend on it.
Does this sound familiar?
- You can tell someone everything about your week and nothing about your money.
- Nobody has the whole story. Each person has a different part.
- After the breakup, the hardest conversation was about who owes what.
- You trust someone completely or not at all, and you know within a week.
What psychology calls it
Carl Jung called it the shadow: what we would rather not know about ourselves does not go away. It turns up where we are most exposed, often with the person closest to us. Erik Erikson wrote about basic trust: before we have words, we learn whether it is safe to depend on someone. Later we test that answer with money, bodies and secrets.
Astrology has its own map for the same ground. The 8th house describes it. It cannot tell you what will happen to you or to anyone you love.
Planets in the 8th house
Moon. You feel what others hide before they say it. Your own feelings you keep where nobody looks.
Mercury. You ask the questions others avoid. You can talk about anyone's hidden life, rarely your own.
Venus. Love arrives with something to share: money, a home, a debt. It is hard to tell when you are giving and when you are paying.
Mars. You want all of it, desire and money alike. A fight about who owes what is rarely about the money.
Saturn. You keep your own account and never owe anyone. It takes years to see that being helped is not a debt.
Uranus. What you built together can change in one day. Part of you keeps a bag packed.
Neptune. You give without counting, and later cannot say where it went. When you love someone, the lines between yours and theirs blur.
Pluto. Nothing halfway. You know how much power a secret holds, and you have kept a few for that reason.
Chiron. Something broke once when you trusted. Now people bring you what they cannot tell anyone else.
No planets in your 8th house?
That is common, and it does not mean nothing deep happens in your life. Look at the sign on the cusp of the house (the line where it begins) and at where that sign's ruler sits in your chart. The ruler shows where what you share with others tends to come up.
